Stop Organizing Clutter: 6 Simple Steps to Finally Declutter Your Home

Think the first step to organizing is buying cute containers or more bins?
You’re not alone—and you’re not totally wrong. But you are skipping the most important step.

Here’s the truth:
You don’t need better storage. You need less stuff.

If you’ve ever felt like:

  • You're constantly “organizing” but nothing stays tidy

  • You’re just shuffling clutter from one room to another

  • Your home feels heavy and chaotic no matter how hard you try

👉 This blog is your wake-up call and your step-by-step plan.

Let’s get into it.

Stop organizing clutter, decluttering steps

🚨 Step 1: Start With the Right Mindset

The goal is NOT to find prettier bins. The goal is to remove what no longer serves you.

Before you even touch a drawer:

  • Pick one small area: a shelf, a drawer, a single pile

  • This isn’t about perfection—it’s about progress

Set a timer for 20 minutes. No more, no less. Let’s make it doable.

🧰 Step 2: Gather Your Decluttering Supplies

No need for anything fancy—just what helps you make decisions and move things out fast:

✅ Black trash bag (trash)
✅ Recycle bin or bag
✅ Tote or laundry basket (relocate)
✅ Bag or box (donate)
✅ Tote + Post-its (give to someone you know)
✅ Clear space to sort: table, bed, floor, etc.

✂️ Step 3: Start Sorting (Here’s EXACTLY What to Ask Yourself)

Touch every item. Yes—every single one.
Hold it. Look at it. Ask:

  1. Have I used this in the last year?
    If yes → Keep.
    If no → Move on.

  2. Is it broken, expired, or useless?
If yes → Trash or recycle it.

  3. Is this item making me feel guilty?
If yes → It might be a “should” item, not a “joy” item. Time to let it go.

  4. Does this belong in this space?
If no → Relocate it elsewhere.

  5. Would someone else benefit from this?
If yes → Label it and pass it along.

  6. If none of the above apply—let it go.
Sell it, donate it, or toss it. Just don’t overthink it.

🛑 Step 4: Break Without Bailing

After 20 minutes of sorting, take a 5-minute break—but stay in the room.
Look around. Feel the difference. You just created space. Celebrate it!

And… do a quick audit:
If your keep pile is way too big, give it another pass. Clutter likes to hide there.

✅ Step 5: Wrap It Up (No Clutter Left Behind)

Before you leave the space:

  • Trash = out to the bin

  • Recycle = out to the bin

  • Donations = into the car

  • Offload = labeled & ready to gift

You just cleared a space and made decisions. That’s huge.

🔁 Step 6: Repeat the Process in Bite-Sized Bursts

This is how real homes get decluttered—in doable 30-minute sessions, not Pinterest-perfect marathons.

Start where you are. Use what you have. Keep going.
